Ian graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1983 and has worked hard throughout his career to improve his skills and keep up to date with new developments in dentistry. Having worked in Edinburgh and London Ian moved to Hawick in 1992 and was instrumental in the transition from NHS to an independent practice focusing on quality care and preventive dentistry.
Ian has spent time as a vocational trainer, training young dentists, and doing voluntary work in Africa where he helped train local medical professionals to relieve dental pain. Developing a strong empathetic client relationship is a critical part of Ian’s approach to give you the confidence you are in safe hands.
Ian won the best cosmetic crown award in the Private Dentistry awards for 2017, he is a perfectionist who will make every effort to ensure you are happy with your whole mouth and can smile with confidence.

Ian and his wife Gillian have a grown up family and 3 granddaughters with a fourth on the way. The girls love their visits to Nana and Papa’s where they enjoy nothing more than cuddling up on the sofa while Nana reads a story or dressing up from the wardrobe of wonders acquired from local charity shops.
The beautiful countryside of the Scottish Borders provides the perfect backdrop for cycle rides and walking with Robin their newly acquired 2 year old lurcher.
When he’s not working cycling or walking the dog Ian will be found in his workshop upcycling or renovating furniture or anything else in need of TLC.
Food is a very important part of Ian and Gillian’s life and they are constantly on the lookout for new ideas and recipes to cook for dinner guests or just everyday meals. A healthy varied diet is a mainstay of their philosophy for a happy healthy lifestyle.
“I was distraught when I slipped on black ice and broke my existing bridge. I received an emergency appt the next morning and was immediately reassured that Ian would be able to help. He assessed the damage and made another appt for later the same day and Ian & Katie did their magic and I was fitted with a temporary bridge. Then 3 days before Christmas I was fitted with my lovely new one. As usual the treatment was excellent and I couldn’t have been better looked after by the team.”
